The Northern Oesophago-Gastric Unit (NOGU), based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a specialist centre for the investigation and treatment of oesophageal and stomach cancer.

We provide care for patients from across the North East and Cumbria, working closely with colleagues throughout the regional oesophago-gastric cancer service. Our multidisciplinary team brings together specialist surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, clinical nurse specialists, dietitians and other healthcare professionals.

The unit provides a full range of diagnostic, endoscopic, oncological and surgical treatments, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery where appropriate. We also have an active programme of clinical research, education and training aimed at improving outcomes and patient experience.

Specialist Expertise

NOGU provides specialist assessment and treatment for a wide range of oesophageal and gastric conditions, with particular expertise in oesophageal and stomach cancer.

Our team offers endoscopic, surgical and oncological treatment as part of an individualised care plan. Where surgery is appropriate, this may include open, minimally invasive or robotic approaches depending on the condition and the needs of the patient.

We also assess and manage selected complex benign upper gastrointestinal conditions, including reflux disease, Barrett’s oesophagus and other disorders requiring specialist upper GI input.

Care at NOGU is delivered by a specialist multidisciplinary team, with treatment decisions made collaboratively and tailored to each individual patient.

Throughout your care, you may meet surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals. Each member of the team contributes to making sure your diagnosis, treatment and recovery are planned as safely and effectively as possible.

Our clinical nurse specialists are a central point of contact for patients and families, providing information, advice and support throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

Alongside clinical care, NOGU is actively involved in research, education and training, helping to develop and improve the treatment of oesophageal and stomach cancer.
